Helmet Head

Wes has been in his helmet for over 5 weeks now, and unlike so many aspects of his life thus far, his time in the helmet has not flown by.  Overall, he has adjusted pretty well.  He was not sleeping as well at night for a while, and it still is pretty hard to get him to sleep (how exactly do you snuggle in someone's arms with a large plastic shell covering a third of your body?!).  He is struggling with rolling over and sitting up, both of which can be delayed with the use of a helmet.  Now that the weather is warmer, we've had some pretty sweaty (and stinky) hair days underneath the helmet as well.

But we can't deny that the helmet is adorable.  Wes seems like he's ready to do anything when he's wearing it!  Pick-up game of football? He's there!  Race car driving?  Sign him up, he's got his crash helmet ready to go!  Sometimes a toy might even find its way into the top hole of his helmet...usually because Mom thinks it's funny to put one there.

To say we've been enjoying the nice weather is an understatement.  It has been a great mood-lifter for everyone.  Babies are certainly fun, but dreary winter days can seem awfully long when you're stuck indoors.  Wes likes going for walks, strolling through Uptown Normal, and most recently, going for bike rides in his new trailer attached to Mom's bike.

Finally, Kristy has decided to stop working after this school year.  It's a big leap of faith, as it is going to be financially challenging to cut our income in half; however, the benefit of staying at home with Wes seems to outweigh the monetary struggles we'll encounter.  You can survive on love alone, right?!  Luckily, Kristy is able to substitute teach within the school district since Grandma Miller lives down the street and can babysit on short notice.  Subbing, along with profit from Kristy's quilting business(www.quiltsbykristy.com) should be enough to help pay the bills and put food on the table.

Below are some snapshots of this past month with the helmet.  We were able to take a few during the one hour of sweet freedom Wes has with the helmet off every evening (of which he spends most of that hour itching his head).  We can't wait for the day that we can keep the helmet off for good!
